Death metal seperti kita ketahui selama beberapa dekade terakhir, menunjukan peningkatan signifikan. Berkat antusiasme dari penggemar dan penikmat musik kematian ini, musik ini berkembang tidak lagi sebagai kultur musik yang dianggap sebagai kultur musik pinggiran. Lebih dari itu, death metal sekarang sudah menjadi salah satu pilar bagi skena metal secara global.
Death metal juga menjadi ujung tombak yang sangat diandalkan oleh skena metal dalam hal eksperimentasi dan eksplorasi untuk menembus batasan-batasan musik yang lebih jauh. Disamping black metal, terlihat musik ini yang paling rajin melahirkan term-term baru dalam rangka mengklasifikasikan berbagai varian turunan musik. Mulai dari melodeath, brutal death metal, technical death metal, hingga terakhir maraknya tren revivalis OSDM seperti menandakan bahwa musik ini tidak ada matinya untuk mencitakan sebuah trendsetter bagi musik metal.
